Alejandro Garnacho transfer trick protects Man Utd from nightmare scenario
Manchester United have safeguarded themselves with a clause in the event that Chelsea decide to sell Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine had a bit of a rocky start to his new season with the Blues, spending two of the first five matches across all competitions on the bench and only getting a starting spot against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup.
However, the 21-year-old seems to be hitting his stride recently having become Enzo Maresca's first-choice left winger. Under his guidance, Garnacho has netted two goals and provided two assists in his last four appearances.
Following his strike in the defeat to Sunderland, Garnacho then scored off the bench against Qarabag in the Champions League. The 21-year-old carried his good form into last weekend's win against Wolves as he assisted goals for both Malo Gusto and Pedro Neto.
While this will undoubtedly bring a smile to the Chelsea head coach's face, United supporters might be worried that their club has once again let go of a player who could flourish elsewhere. But it appears United were savvy to the situation, particularly given Chelsea's current transfer strategy.
The Blues are renowned for snapping up young talents on long-term contracts with that further evidenced by Garnacho's deal running until 2032. The goal is to cultivate a youthful squad and, when the moment is right, offload players at a profit after nurturing their careers.
The best example of that is the decision to sell Noni Madueke to Arsenal with Chelsea going close to earning double what they paid. United clearly had Chelsea's tactics in mind, as they included a 10 per cent sell-on clause in Garnacho's contract.
This means that if Chelsea were to move him on for double the £40million paid to sign him, Ruben Amorim's side would pocket £8m from the sale. Garnacho l bid farewell to Old Trafford following a public spat with Amorim over his limited game time in the Europa League final.
He stated: "Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don't know. The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards."
Now looking for a new beginning at Chelsea, Garnacho is keen to prove Amorim wrong. United, meanwhile, will likely be satisfied if their sell-on clause eventually proves fruitful.
