Thomas Müller, Bayern Munich still weighing up potential contract extension

There is, without a doubt, no arguing just how much Thomas Müller means to Bayern Munich, but he has entered the phase this season where his minutes have been managed by Vincent Kompany and he is not often finding himself in the starting lineups. So far this season, he has made a total of 31 appearances across all competitions, the majority of which have been off of the bench, or starts in matches where Kompany was in need of making necessary rotations.

The question for Müller still looms large; will he wind up renewing his contract beyond the end of this season? His contract expires this June and it has still not yet been decided whether or not this will be the Raumdeuter’s last season with the German Rekordmeister, at least as a player. He has plenty of options for what might be next — a move to North America to play in the MLS, going to the Middle East, or he could even switch right into punditry if he decides to hang up his boots for good.

For what it’s worth, Müller was asked about his contract situation in a recent interview with Der Spiegel (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). When he was asked outright whether or not he will extend his contract, he replied, “we are in talks. Let’s see.”

At this juncture, there is a lot to consider for both Müller and the club, so they are really assessing what would be the best option for all parties. “Whether it fits. We’re talking about the sporting perspective and the financial package,” Bayern’s number 25 had said what, exactly, he was weighing up with his decision-making process.

With the answers he had given, Müller was giving indirect indications that he certainly still wants to play beyond the end of this season, he is just unsure right now whether or not it will continue to be with Bayern. “I’m not ruling anything out. It could also be over in the summer. But I’m still having a lot of fun playing football,” he said.

From the fan perspective, there is certainly a clamor for Müller to stay for as long as possible and then transition into some sort of coaching role at some capacity at the club, but he has a lot to consider. He is already well up there in the annals of FC Bayern history, having tallied just under 250 goals across all competitions along the way from over 700 appearances. If he were to leave the club, or hang up his boots for good, no one could blame him, but there could still yet be a lot left for Müller at Bayern before all is said and done.
